I am inspired by the light and architecture of the New England landscape and by the human face and figure. The most joyful experience to me is to paint outdoors when the weather allows, and sometimes even when it doesn't. To start a painting on a blank canvas or paper and to keep it loose and fresh is my favorite challenge.
My first teacher, Arthur Maynard, of the Ridgewood, New Jersey, Art Association taught me the importance of values, light, large shapes and masses, and instilled in me the principles and techniques that have guided my efforts in oil painting. My watercolor heroes are Tony Van Hasselt and Judi Wagner who have been supportive for many years, and whose workshops have enabled me to explore and paint in many wonderful places.
I have exhibited in the American Watercolor Society, and Newburyport, MA, Art Association juried shows, and am a signature member of the New England Watercolor Society. At the Mount Washington Valley Art Association, I've won several firsts and seconds including Best In Show at the Brass Heart Inn 2006 show, and First Prize at the Winter Show, 2008. I continue to teach workshops and classes in figure, landscape and still life painting in both media. I show my work at Surroundings Gallery in Center Sandwich, N. H., as well as in my Freedom Gallery.
Your comments about this site would be most welcome. I would encourage inquiries about prices of the paintings shown here, and about watercolor and oil portraits which are available on commission.
